Enhanced Oil Recovery, or Tertiary Recovery In Figure 1.07, Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR), or Tertiary Recovery, is also applied to large reservoirs. EOR involves the injection of fluids into the reservoir, which aids in crude oil production by means other than simply supplying external reservoir energy. There are three main methods of secondary recovery: thermal recovery, gas injection and chemical injection. The most widely used method of secondary oil recovery is gas injection. Once gas, such as nitrogen or carbon dioxide, is introduced into the reservoir, it expands. This expansion forces oil through the formation and into the well. Tertiary recovery (Enhanced Oil Recovery, EOR) The term enhanced oil recovery (EOR) basically refers to the recovery of oil by any method beyond the primary, secondary stage of oil production. It is defined as the production of crude oil from reservoirs through processes taken to increase the primary reservoir drive. The aim of TORP research is to evaluate the full potential of the oil recovery processes in the region. This includes tertiary oil recovery as well as more standard technologies such as waterflooding. •Secondary/Tertiary recovery is becoming essential to recovery maximum potential from these reservoirs. •From field and simulation experience waterflooding tight oil reservoirs should close to double primary RF. RF~15- 25%. •CO2 miscible injection also proving to be favourable in field and simulation results. Tertiary recovery allows another 5% to 15% of the reservoir's oil to be recovered. In some California heavy oil fields, steam injection has doubled or even tripled the oil reserves and ultimate oil recovery. For example, see Midway-Sunset Oil Field, California's largest oilfield. There are three main types of enhanced oil recovery: Thermal Recovery. This is the most prevalent type of EOR in the USA and works by heating the oil to reduce its viscosity and allowing easier flow to the surface. This is most commonly achieved by introducing steam into the reservoir, which will work to heat the oil.
